Forth Chicago Favorites: Bakeries / by Clare Johnson

Happy Friday! Today we're bringing you the second installment of our new Forth Approved map series. We introduced this series last week with our Forth Favorites: Coffeehouses & Cafes map. Today, we're talking about coffee's best friend - baked goods! Our intent for this series is to package all the incredible recommendations from our community and deliver them to you in an organized format that, hopefully!, inspires you to try a new place. The bakeries and cafes on today's list are geographically spread and gigantically delicious. Sweet tooth fans, rejoice!

1. Lovely, Too: A Bake Shop - 1138 West Bryn Mawr Ave. Chicago, IL 60660

Forth Approved by Olivia Schuman Joffrey

Olivia recommends Lovely, Too for a great day out of the office. Lovely makes great pies, and has a wonderful farm-house aesthetic inside with shared tables. They make the fancy milk coffees with a heart shaped foam pattern and have free wifi.

2. Pleasant House Bakery - 964 West 31st St. Chicago, IL 60608

Forth Approved by Margot Harrington, Melissa Salvatore and Jamie Davis

If you're looking for a place to bring out of town guests, this hot spot comes highly recommended by Melissa, Margot and Jamie. Next time you visit, Margot insists that you try the flakey, savory pies.

3. Middle East Bakery & Grocery - 1512 West Foster Avenue, Chicago, IL 60640

Forth Approved by Veronica Corzo-Duchardt and Julie Morelli

Middle East Bakery's handmade meat and veggie pies appear to be the winning item - specifically the parsley pie! Not in the mood for pie? Veronica and Julie both recommend the spicy hummus. If you're up in Andersonville, stop in, "get a grab bag of everything at that counter, a tub of hummus, find a quiet spot in a park nearby, and have a friend stop by with the wine…" (Julie). Sounds like a perfect summer evening date!

Sauce & Bread Kitchen

Forth Approved by Veronica Corzo-DuchardtSauce and Bread Kitchen resides in Rogers Park and, as you can imagine, they make fantastic bread! Did you know the Sauce and Bread bakers are also the people behind Co-op Hot Sauce? A one stop shop - bread and delectable hot sauce!

5. Café Selmarie - 4729 North Lincoln Avenue, Chicago, IL 60625

Forth Approved by Bryn McCoy

Care to make a date in Lincoln Square? If so, Bryn recommends stopping by two favored locations in the Square - The Book Cellar and Cafe Selmarie, conveniently located right across the street from one another.

6. Uncommon Ground - 3800 N Clark St, Chicago, IL 60613

Forth Approved by Clare Johnson

This restaurant fits into numerous categories. Stop in, sit by the fireplace while enjoying on a cup of coffee and a sweet or savory treat. Uncommon comes highly recommended by yours truly (!) for their amazing food, ambiance and sustainable food initiative.

7. Baker Miller - 610 North Western Avenue, Chicago, IL 60625

Forth Approved by Margot Harrington and Johanna Winter Harper

The lovely couple who started Bang Bang recently opened this beautiful café in Lincoln Square. No ordinary bakery, the Miller's (yes, that is Dave and Megan’s last name) will be milling their own flour and promoting heirloom food trades.

8. Currency Exchange Café - 305 East Garfield Boulevard, Chicago, IL 60637

Forth Approved by Margot Harrington and Patrice Perkins

It's winter and we could all use some added comfort. According to Margot, Currency Exchange Cafe is comfort food and its finest! This cafe also earns Patrice's "newfound favorite coffee shop" badge of honor. She recommends the food, specifically the pancakes, tacos, Mexican corn, and the chai tea latte.

Now go satisfy that sweet tooth and have a wonderful weekend!
